PDF, SVG or DXF? Choosing a papercraft download

File extensions describe a format, not everything a download can do. The right choice depends on whether you will cut by hand, use a cutting machine or follow a three-dimensional assembly guide.

PDF: useful for printing and instructions

A PDF can contain printable templates, diagrams or written instructions. It does not necessarily include all three. Check the listing for supported paper sizes, required sheets and whether an assembly guide is included.

When dimensions matter, follow the designer’s print settings. Printing at actual size rather than fitting to the page can be important. If the template has a measurement square, check it with a ruler before cutting your materials.

SVG and DXF: check your software first

SVG is a vector format often used for cutting paths. DXF is another format that some design and cutting programs can import. Support depends on the application, its version and sometimes the edition you have. Verify compatibility before buying, rather than assuming a machine brand guarantees it.

Importing a file is only the first step. Confirm the intended dimensions and distinguish cutting paths from score or fold lines using the designer’s instructions. A file opening successfully does not prove that its operations have been assigned correctly.

Make a small material test

Use the paper weight and adhesive recommended for the design. Thicker card is not always better: it can be harder to fold cleanly, while thin paper may not hold a large model’s shape. Test a spare fold or connector before assembling the main piece.

Some downloads arrive as ZIP archives that must be extracted first. Review the exact file list, tools, skill level and usage licence on the product page. A digital template does not include paper, a cutting machine or a finished physical model.

This is a general getting-started guide, not a complete pattern. Always follow the instructions and usage terms supplied with your chosen design.
